Common questions

Why does Return need usage access?

So it can tell when one of the apps you chose is opened — that moment is the whole point of the pause. Return does not build a report of your usage or send your history anywhere.

Why "display over other apps"?

The pause is an overlay — the gentle screen that appears at the doorway. Without this permission there is nowhere for the pause to appear.

Why notifications?

Check-ins arrive like a quiet message. If notifications are off, they may not reach you.

Return stopped appearing. What happened?

Almost always a battery manager. Many phones (especially Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus) aggressively stop background apps to save power, which can silence Return's pauses. Exempting Return from battery optimization in your system settings usually fixes it. Return points you to that screen during setup.

Does it work offline, or without AI?

Yes. Return holds every pause with its own written lines even with no internet and no AI connected — and then nothing leaves your phone. The AI is an option, never a requirement.

What does the AI cost?

If you bring your own Anthropic API key, Anthropic bills your key directly for what you use — Return adds nothing. If you were given an invite code, it runs on a shared budget at no cost to you.

Is there French support?

Yes — Return speaks Canadian French, and you can write to support in French.
